About University of Houston-Victoria
From community vision to a comprehensive university, UHV empowers students in Victoria.
The University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) stands as a testament to community vision and a commitment to accessible higher education. What began as a local effort in the late 1960s to bring a learning institution to Victoria quickly blossomed, evolving from an off-campus center to a vital, degree-granting university within the prestigious University of Houston System. UHV prides itself on a dynamic growth story, continually expanding its offerings to meet the needs of its students and the region it serves.
Initially established as the University of Houston Victoria Center in 1971, the institution welcomed its first 100 students in spring 1973. A pivotal moment arrived in 1983 when the Texas legislature granted permanent degree-granting status, officially renaming it the University of Houston-Victoria and solidifying its place as the fourth university in the UH System. This milestone transformed UHV into a cornerstone for academic achievement and professional development in the Victoria area, allowing students to pursue their educational aspirations close to home.
UHV's commitment to a vibrant student experience is evident in its burgeoning campus life. The university launched its athletics program during the 2007–2008 school year, with the Jaguars competing in baseball and softball within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, later expanding to include men's and women's soccer and golf. Further enhancing the campus experience, UHV began admitting freshmen and sophomores in fall 2010, concurrently opening its first residence hall, Jaguar Hall, to welcome a new generation of students to live and learn on campus. This ongoing expansion ensures UHV provides a holistic, engaging, and supportive environment for all its students.
