University of Houston-Victoria

The University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) stands as a testament to community vision and educational expansion, growing from an ambitious local effort into a vibrant component of the University of Houston System. Born from a late 1960s community initiative to bring higher education to Victoria, UHV has continuously evolved to meet the needs of its students and region. It offers a unique blend of a close-knit campus environment with the resources of a larger university system, making it an attractive choice for those seeking a supportive yet comprehensive academic experience.

UHV's history is marked by significant milestones, beginning as the University of Houston Victoria Center in 1971. In its inaugural semester in Spring 1973, it welcomed 100 students, laying the foundation for what was to come. A pivotal moment arrived in 1983 when the Texas legislature granted the institution permanent degree-granting status, officially renaming it the University of Houston-Victoria and solidifying its place as the fourth university within the prestigious University of Houston System.

The university underwent a transformative expansion, broadening its appeal to a wider student body. Following legislative approval in 2009, UHV proudly began admitting freshmen and sophomores in Fall 2010. This significant development marked its transition into a comprehensive four-year institution, complete with the opening of its first residence hall, Jaguar Hall, providing an enriched on-campus living experience.

Beyond academics, UHV fosters a dynamic student life, highlighted by its spirited athletics program. The UHV Jaguars began competing in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in the 2007–2008 school year, initially with baseball and softball. The program expanded to include men's and women's soccer and golf in Fall 2010, offering student-athletes opportunities for competition and camaraderie.
