University of Mount Olive

The University of Mount Olive stands as a testament to a long-held vision for education, initially conceived by Free Will Baptists in North Carolina. Founded in 1951 and opening its doors in 1952, this private university is deeply committed to its original mission, evolving from a junior college to the comprehensive institution it is today. Its enduring motto, "Collegium Christianum Pro Homnibus et Mulieribus," reflects a dedication to Christian education for all.

The university's history traces back much further than its official charter. The seeds of its educational philosophy were planted as early as 1897 when Free Will Baptists in Pitt County, North Carolina, recognized a vital need for education within their community. This led to the establishment of foundational institutions like the Free Will Baptist Theological Seminary and its successor, Eureka College, both focused on educating ministers and providing a robust liberal arts education to local constituents.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1931 when a catastrophic fire destroyed the administration building of Eureka College, leading to its cessation of operations. However, this setback only solidified the Free Will Baptist church's resolve. Their educational aspirations were re-invested, culminating in the founding of what would become the University of Mount Olive. From its inception as a junior college, the institution has proudly maintained its sponsorship by the Original Free Will Baptist Convention.

Originally chartered in 1951, the university opened its first campus in 1952 at Cragmont Assembly, a Free Will Baptist summer retreat near Black Mountain, North Carolina. Initially known as Mount Allen Junior College, drawing its name from the nearby mountain, the university has continuously evolved while staying true to its founding principles of providing a quality, faith-based education under the leadership of its President, H. Edward Croom.
