The University of North Georgia (UNG) stands out as a distinctive public institution in Georgia, proudly holding the designation as one of only six Senior Military Colleges in the United States. Known affectionately as "The Military College of Georgia," UNG combines a profound commitment to leadership development through its robust ROTC program, which engages over 600 students annually, with a broad spectrum of academic opportunities across its multiple campuses. With nearly 20,000 enrolled students, it holds the impressive title of the sixth-largest public university in the state, offering a vibrant and diverse learning environment.

UNG's rich history begins in 1873 with the founding of North Georgia Agricultural College, making it Georgia's first coeducational college. A true pioneer, it was also the first public institution in the state to award a degree to a female in its inaugural graduating class of 1879. Funded initially by the Morrill Act, the college consistently evolved, strengthening its military presence, particularly after the National Defense Act of 1916. This historical foundation laid the groundwork for its enduring legacy of service and academic excellence.

The modern University of North Georgia was established on January 8, 2013, through the strategic merger of North Georgia College & State University and Gainesville State College. This consolidation created a powerful academic force, offering over one hundred bachelor's and associate degrees, thirteen master's degrees, and one doctoral degree. Students can choose from a wide array of programs, from traditional liberal arts to specialized professional fields, all within a supportive and engaging academic framework.

Spread across five picturesque campuses in Dahlonega, Oakwood (Gainesville Campus), Watkinsville (Oconee Campus), Blue Ridge, and Cumming, UNG provides a flexible and accessible educational experience. Beyond the classroom, students have access to recreational facilities on the Gainesville and Dahlonega campuses, and the university frequently hosts a variety of academic and athletic camps.
