University of Northern Colorado

The University of Northern Colorado (UNC), a distinguished public institution, began its remarkable journey on April 1, 1889, as the State Normal School of Colorado. Born from a community's vision, Greeley citizens famously rallied to raise $11,175 for its first building, Cranford Hall, on land generously donated by John P. Cranford. What started with just 4 instructors and 96 students in October 1890 has blossomed into a vibrant educational hub, now serving 8,869 students.

Throughout its history, UNC has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to evolving with educational needs, reflected in its several name changes. From its initial focus on training educators as the Colorado State Teachers College in 1911, and later the Colorado State College of Education, at Greeley, it consistently adapted. In 1957, it simplified to Colorado State College, before finally adopting its current and enduring identity as the University of Northern Colorado on May 1, 1970.

Today, under the leadership of President Andy Feinstein, UNC continues to uphold its motto, "Sapientia in aeternum est" (Wisdom is eternal). With a robust endowment of $0.1 billion, this institution fosters a dynamic learning environment, preparing students for impactful careers and contributing significantly to the intellectual and professional landscape of Colorado and beyond. It remains a testament to its foundational principles of community support and academic dedication.
