About University of Northern Colorado
UNC: Empowering futures through a rich history of public education in Colorado.
The University of Northern Colorado (UNC) stands as a proud public institution with a rich legacy rooted in the heart of Colorado. Established in 1889, UNC has evolved from its initial focus on educating teachers into a comprehensive university, offering a diverse array of programs to nearly 9,000 students. Guided by its motto, "Sapientia in aeternum est" (Wisdom is eternal), UNC is dedicated to fostering a vibrant and supportive learning environment that prepares students for success in a dynamic world.
UNC's story began with a strong community spirit. In 1889, with the approval of Senate Bill 104, the State Normal School of Colorado was officially established. The citizens of Greeley demonstrated incredible foresight and commitment, raising $11,175 to build Cranford Hall, the institution's first building, on land generously donated by John P. Cranford. This spirit of community and dedication to education has been a cornerstone of UNC since its very opening on October 6, 1890.
Over the decades, the university's growth and expanding academic mission were reflected in several name changes, moving from Colorado State Teachers College to Colorado State College of Education, at Greeley, then to Colorado State College, before finally becoming the University of Northern Colorado in 1970. Each transformation marked a broadening of its academic scope while maintaining its core commitment to public service and educational excellence.
Today, under the leadership of President Andy Feinstein, UNC continues to uphold its founding principles, providing an accessible and impactful higher education experience. With a student body of 8,869, UNC cultivates an engaging campus life where students can pursue their passions, engage in meaningful research, and prepare to become leaders in their chosen fields, all within a welcoming Colorado community.
