The University of Rhode Island (URI) stands as the proud flagship public land-grant research university of the state, classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity." This prestigious designation underscores its commitment to groundbreaking research and scholarly excellence, making it a vibrant hub for discovery and learning. As the largest university in Rhode Island, URI offers a comprehensive and dynamic academic environment for its over 17,000 students.

Established in 1892 as the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, URI has a rich history of evolution and expansion. From its agricultural roots on the Oliver Watson Farm, it progressively broadened its curriculum, officially becoming Rhode Island State College in 1909 and finally the University of Rhode Island in 1951, reflecting its expanded offerings including doctoral degrees and the addition of the College of Arts and Sciences. A testament to its progressive values, URI proudly graduated its first African American student, Harvey Robert Turner, in 1914.

Today, URI empowers students with a vast array of academic choices, offering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees across 80 undergraduate and 49 graduate areas of study. These programs are delivered through nine academic schools and colleges, complemented by the University College for Academic Success, which provides crucial advising and support for incoming undergraduates.

Beyond its main Kingston campus, URI extends its reach with satellite locations like the Rhode Island Nursing Education Center in Providence and the Narragansett Bay Campus, providing specialized learning opportunities in diverse settings, cultivating a well-rounded and impactful student experience.
