Rio Grande's foundational story is one of vision and perseverance. The seed was planted by Free Will Baptist minister Ira Haning, who inspired affluent residents Nehemiah and Permelia Atwood to establish a college. Following Nehemiah's passing in 1869, Permelia Ridgeway Atwood championed this dream, establishing an endowment and deeding 10 acres of land in 1873. Her unwavering commitment brought Rio Grande College to life, officially opening its doors on September 13, 1876, with Ransom Dunn serving as its inaugural president and a key professor.
Today, the University of Rio Grande continues to uphold its rich legacy of providing accessible, quality education. With a vibrant student body of 2,300, it remains committed to its mission of "Changing Tomorrows" by equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive.
