The university's inspiring origins date back to the vision of Free Will Baptist minister Ira Haning, who convinced affluent residents Nehemiah and Permelia Atwood to establish a college. Following Nehemiah's passing in 1869, Permelia Ridgeway Atwood heroically took up the mantle, establishing an endowment and deeding 10 acres of land in 1873. Her unwavering dedication brought Rio Grande College to life on September 13, 1876, with Ransom Dunn serving as its inaugural president, laying the groundwork for over a century of educational excellence.
