About University of Rio Grande
A unique institution where private university spirit meets public community college accessibility.
The University of Rio Grande stands out as a truly distinctive institution, operating as both a private university and a public community college. With a vibrant community of 2,300 students, Rio Grande embraces its motto, "Changing Tomorrows," by offering diverse educational pathways designed to empower individuals and transform futures. This dual identity ensures a broad appeal, providing the focused academics and close-knit feel of a private university alongside the accessible, community-focused offerings of a public college.
The university's history is rooted in a remarkable story of vision and philanthropy. It began with the foresight of Free Will Baptist minister Ira Haning, who inspired the affluent entrepreneurs Nehemiah and Permelia Atwood to establish a college. Following Nehemiah's passing in 1869, Permelia Ridgeway Atwood took on the mantle, demonstrating incredible dedication. In 1873, she cemented her legacy by establishing an endowment and deeding 10 acres of land, paving the way for Rio Grande College to officially open its doors on September 13, 1876, with Ransom Dunn serving as its inaugural president and a professor.
Today, under the leadership of President Ryan Smith, the University of Rio Grande continues to honor its foundational principles. Its unique structure means it serves a wide array of students, from those seeking comprehensive bachelor's degrees to individuals pursuing career-focused certificates or associate degrees. This commitment to adaptability and student success ensures that Rio Grande remains a pivotal institution in its region, constantly evolving to meet the educational demands of its community and truly "Changing Tomorrows" for generations to come.
