Our rich history began in 1890 as Saint Francis Normal School in Lafayette, founded by the pioneering Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration with the mission to train teachers. This institution steadily evolved, transitioning from a junior college to a four-year school. A pivotal moment arrived in 1944 when the college relocated to its present Fort Wayne campus, establishing its home on the historic estate of industrialist John H. Bass, a move that solidified its presence in the heart of the city.

The university's journey of growth continued with significant academic expansions. A graduate school was established in 1960, signaling a deeper commitment to advanced studies.
