The University of Saint Mary stands as a testament to educational evolution and pioneering spirit, offering a rich academic environment rooted in a strong Catholic heritage. What began as a dedicated institute for women has blossomed into a comprehensive, coeducational university, deeply committed to serving a diverse student body. Today, USM is recognized for its innovative approach to learning, providing a welcoming campus experience alongside impactful degree programs tailored for aspiring professionals and lifelong learners.

Its journey began in 1858 when the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul arrived in Leavenworth, Kansas, establishing the foundation for what would become a remarkable institution. After starting St. Mary's Institute for women in 1859 and later becoming St. Mary's Academy, the sisters formally established Saint Mary College in 1923. A significant milestone came in 1932, when it became a four-year institute and notably began accepting men in specific areas of study, setting a precedent for inclusion. This pioneering spirit continued with the appointment of Arthur Morton Murphy as its first president, marking him as the first layman to lead a Catholic college for women in the United States.

The University of Saint Mary has consistently been at the forefront of educational innovation, proudly becoming the first four-year institution in 1974 to offer a degree completion program in Kansas City, a vital offering for working adults. The institution fully embraced coeducation in 1988, opening its residential doors to both men and women, further diversifying its vibrant community. With the expansion to a campus in Overland Park in 2000 and its elevation to university status in 2003, USM continues to adapt and grow, providing students with a supportive, forward-thinking academic experience designed to foster intellectual growth and professional success.
