About University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma

Oklahoma's public liberal arts college for curious minds, fostering rigorous academic exploration.

Welcome to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO), proudly known as "College for the Curious Mind." Founded in 1908, USAO stands as Oklahoma's sole public liberal arts college, offering an intimate and intellectually rigorous experience to its 1,000 students. Under the leadership of President Kayla Hale, USAO is dedicated to a broad education that transcends traditional boundaries, preparing students not just for careers, but for a life of continuous learning and critical thought.

USAO's journey began with a unique vision. Established in 1908 as the Oklahoma Industrial Institute and College for Girls, it addressed a critical need for higher education for women in the newly formed state. Its early evolution saw a swift shift from industrial training to a comprehensive liberal arts focus, officially becoming Oklahoma College for Women (OCW) in 1916. This pioneering institution was an important regional hub, solidifying its commitment to diverse fields from art and music to natural sciences and a vital deaf education program.

A transformative period in 1965 saw OCW become coeducational and renamed the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts (OCLA), embracing a new mission to enroll a select group of students for an "intellectually rigorous and accelerated course of study." This commitment to academic excellence continues today, as USAO, adopting its current name in 1972, maintains the highest admission standards in Oklahoma. The institution has also embarked on a Mission Enhancement Plan to further its unique public liberal arts identity, ensuring an enriching and challenging academic environment.

Beyond academics, USAO offers a vibrant student experience within a historically rich setting. Its entire campus proudly holds the distinction of being a national historic district—the only educational institution in Oklahoma to achieve this honor. Continuous investment in campus facilities, from renovated dorms like Sparks Hall to modern apartment complexes and academic buildings, ensures a comfortable and inspiring environment. Students also benefit from engaging projects, such as the Coming Together Park, where they've collaborated with internationally known sculptors, enriching their learning experience with hands-on, creative opportunities.
