The story of USC-Salkehatchie began in 1964, when the citizens of Allendale, Bamberg, and Hampton counties united to bring higher education closer to home. Their passionate plea resonated with the General Assembly, leading to the creation of the Western Carolina Higher Education Commission. Embracing a statewide vision for accessible two-year colleges, the University of South Carolina established the campus in Allendale, strategically named after the Salkehatchie River—a unifying force flowing through all five of the now-participating counties, including Barnwell and Colleton.

Since welcoming its inaugural class of 76 students in 1965, USC-Salkehatchie has steadily grown, expanding its reach and offerings. It extended its educational footprint by providing extension courses in Walterboro starting in 1978, culminating in the establishment of a permanent campus there in 1982. This dedication to growth ensures that students across its service region have convenient access to the resources and support needed to thrive, whether they are starting their college journey or pursuing further professional development.
