The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) stands as Texas's largest Catholic university, deeply rooted in a rich history of service and a commitment to academic excellence. UIW's journey began in 1881, founded by the visionary Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. Their arrival in San Antonio in 1869 to aid during a cholera outbreak quickly expanded into a mission of comprehensive care, establishing the city's first hospital and orphanages. This foundation of compassionate service evolved into education, with the institution initially chartered as a college for women. Over the decades, UIW embraced co-education in 1971 and expanded its reach significantly, becoming the University of the Incarnate Word in 1996 and establishing a strong international presence.
