University of the Southwest

The University of the Southwest (USW) began its educational journey in 1956, not as the comprehensive university it is today, but as Hobbs Baptist College. Initially operating as a two-year junior college, it quickly laid the groundwork for a broader academic future, reflecting an early commitment to expanding educational opportunities in the region.

Just two years after its inception, in 1958, the institution transformed significantly. It was renamed New Mexico Baptist College and began offering four-year degrees, marking a pivotal moment in its growth. This period of expansion continued, leading to a strategic move in 1961 to a new site just north of Hobbs, New Mexico. This relocation coincided with its re-establishment as an interdenominational private four-year liberal arts college, broadening its reach and academic philosophy.

Over the decades, the college continued to evolve, demonstrating a dynamic adaptability. In 1962, it adopted the name College of the Southwest, further emphasizing its regional identity and mission. This evolution culminated in 2008 when it was officially renamed the University of the Southwest. Today, USW stands as a testament to its enduring commitment to providing a robust liberal arts education within an interdenominational framework, preparing students for diverse professional and personal paths.
