About University of Washington-Tacoma Campus
UW-Tacoma: Revitalizing downtown Tacoma with urban education and community focus.
The University of Washington-Tacoma is a dynamic public university that emerged in 1990 to expand higher education opportunities in Washington's South Sound. Part of the esteemed University of Washington system, it quickly became a cornerstone of downtown Tacoma's revitalization, transforming historic buildings into state-of-the-art learning spaces. Initially designed to serve community college transfer students and "time bound, place bound" learners, UW-Tacoma has grown into a comprehensive institution welcoming a diverse student body.
Its journey began in response to a growing need for higher education, leading to the selection of a downtown site near Union Station. Classes first commenced in October 1990 within the historic Perkins Building. Over the years, the campus has thoughtfully renovated former industrial structures, like the Mattress Factory and West Coast Grocery, preserving their heritage while adapting them for modern academic use. This unique blend of history and innovation has fostered a distinctive urban campus environment.
While originally focused on upper-division transfers, UW-Tacoma proudly welcomed its first freshman class in Autumn 2006, significantly expanding its academic offerings and student experience. With a current enrollment exceeding 5,100 students, the university continues to grow, adding new facilities like the Russell T. Joy Building and dedicated on-campus housing at Court 17 Apartments. Students benefit from an engaging urban setting, improved transportation with the Tacoma Link light rail, and unique community partnerships, such as utilizing the artistic resources of Tacoma School of the Arts. UW-Tacoma is more than just a campus; it's a vibrant hub of learning, innovation, and community engagement in the heart of Tacoma.
