Founded in 1963, UWF quickly established itself as the sixth university in Florida's esteemed State University System, embarking on a mission of academic excellence and community engagement. UWF's history is one of thoughtful evolution and adaptability. Initially designed as an upper-level institution for juniors, seniors, and graduate students, it opened its doors in 1967 and celebrated its first graduating class just a year later. This unique beginning laid the groundwork for a university continuously striving for growth, symbolized by its distinctive emblem: the chambered nautilus. Selected by its first president, Harold Crosby, the nautilus signifies growth, change, and accomplishment, principles that remain at the heart of the UWF experience.

The university has consistently refined its academic structure to best serve its student body, culminating in its current organization of four dynamic colleges: the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities; the College of Business; the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering; and the Usha Kundu, MD College of Health, alongside a dedicated School of Education.
