University of Wisconsin-Parkside

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside stands as a vibrant public university, intentionally established in 1968 to serve the educational needs of southeastern Wisconsin. Its distinctive identity is rooted in its expansive 690-acre campus, nestled amidst rolling farmland and woods adjacent to Petrifying Springs Park. This scenic and thoughtfully chosen location reflects its foundational commitment to providing a unique environment for learning and discovery.

The university's history began with a legislative mandate in 1965, leading to the meticulous site selection and naming of "University of Wisconsin-Parkside" in 1966. Its early years were marked by rapid development, from the acquisition of 31 land parcels to the construction of initial buildings. By 1969, UW-Parkside welcomed its first students, with an enrollment of nearly 3,000 across its sites, and saw its first cohort of 36 students graduate just a year later. The institution's growth culminated with the completion of the campus facilities, including the student union, and its integration into the unified University of Wisconsin System in 1971.

Beyond its picturesque setting, UW-Parkside quickly carved out a niche in academic and research endeavors. Early on, researchers secured significant grants from the U.S. Navy for studies related to Project Sanguine, and a life sciences professor even discovered a new species of parasitic worm, *Acanthocephalus parksidei*, naming it in honor of the university. Student life flourished with the establishment of its "Rangers" athletic teams, the election of its first student government, and the formation of a robust Alumni Association. The university boasts an impressive athletic heritage, having produced Olympic marathoner Lucien Rosa, six-time national race-walking champion Jim Heiring, and NBA player Abdul Jeelani (formerly Gary Cole), embodying a holistic approach to student development.
