University of Wisconsin-Whitewater

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater stands as a dynamic public university with a rich and storied history, proudly educating generations of students since its founding in 1868. Originally established as the "Whitewater Normal School," the institution's primary mission was to train educators, graduating its first class of teachers in 1870. On an unannounced day each term, faculty would be absent, and students would elect their own president and faculty to manage the day's duties. UW-Whitewater's academic breadth expanded considerably over the decades. In 1927, it became "Whitewater Teachers College," gaining the authority to grant baccalaureate degrees in education. It was further designated a Wisconsin State University in 1964, and finally, in 1971, it became an integral part of the broader University of Wisconsin System, adopting its current and familiar name: the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater.
