Utah Valley University: Where growth meets opportunity, truly 'A Place For You'.
Utah Valley University (UVU) stands as a dynamic public university, known for its rapid growth and unwavering commitment to its motto, "A Place For You." With a thriving student body of over 48,670, UVU has established itself as a beacon of learning and opportunity in Utah, continually evolving to meet the diverse educational needs of its community and beyond. It’s a place where students from all walks of life can find their path and excel, fostering an inclusive and supportive academic environment.
UVU's journey is one of remarkable transformation, beginning in the fall of 1941 as the Central Utah Vocational School. Over the decades, it steadily expanded its mission and offerings, reflecting its growing role in higher education. Milestones included becoming Utah Trade Technical Institute in 1963, then Utah Technical College in Provo in 1967, at which point it first gained the authority to confer associate degrees. Its move to a modern campus in Orem in 1977 signaled further expansion, culminating in its elevation to Utah Valley Community College in 1987 and then Utah Valley State College in 1993, when it began awarding four-year degrees.
The institution achieved full university status on July 1, 2008, officially becoming Utah Valley University and gaining the ability to offer master's degrees, while maintaining its strong emphasis on accessible two- and four-year programs. Today, under the leadership of its first female president, Astrid S. Tuminez, UVU is not only a crucial educational hub but also the largest employer in Orem, underscoring its deep integration and positive impact on the local economy. Its comprehensive academic offerings, coupled with a welcoming and growth-oriented environment, ensure a rich and supportive student experience.
