This deep historical root signifies a continuous legacy in academic excellence, even seeing early faculty like Clark T. Hinman go on to become the first president of Northwestern University. Over the decades, the institution evolved through several identities—from Montpelier Seminary to Vermont Junior College and then Vermont College—before its MFA programs ultimately incorporated as the independent Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2008, solidifying its specialized focus on the arts.

The student experience at VCFA is characterized by its innovative, low-residency model, which, though historically rooted in Vermont, has embraced adaptability. After holding residencies in locations like Colorado and Pennsylvania, VCFA embarked on a significant new chapter in April 2024 by becoming an affiliate college of the prestigious California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). This landmark affiliation means that beginning in January 2025, VCFA students will experience their residencies on the dynamic CalArts campus in the Los Angeles metro, offering unparalleled access to a world-class artistic hub and strengthening an already robust arts education for the next generation of creative leaders.
