Vermont College of Fine Arts

Vermont College of Fine Arts (VCFA) stands as a distinctive institution, renowned for its specialized Master of Fine Arts (MFA) programs. VCFA boasts a rich and complex history, tracing its origins back to the Newbury Seminary, which first opened its doors in Newbury, Vermont, in 1834. Over nearly two centuries, the institution evolved through several iterations, including the Montpelier Seminary, Vermont Junior College, and Vermont College, affiliating with Norwich University and later Union Institute & University. The current Vermont College of Fine Arts was established in 2008 when its MFA programs separated to form an independent entity focused exclusively on graduate-level fine arts education.

A defining characteristic of VCFA has been its innovative residency model. Initially rooted in Vermont, the college adopted a nomadic approach for its residencies after June 2022, holding sessions at prestigious locations like Colorado College and Susquehanna University. In a significant development for its future, VCFA became an affiliate college of the esteemed California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in April 2024, providing a new and permanent home for its residencies on the CalArts campus in the Los Angeles metro area starting January 2025. This affiliation promises to enrich the student experience by integrating them into a dynamic and world-renowned artistic community.
