The institution's history began with Anthony Doria, who founded Vermont Law School. The first classes commenced in the summer of 1973, welcoming 113 eager students into what was then the historic South Royalton schoolhouse. This period of rapid establishment saw VLGS swiftly gain recognition, being certified as an institution of higher learning by the Vermont State Board of Education in December 1973, underscoring its immediate credibility and educational rigor.

Demonstrating its commitment to excellence, Vermont Law School secured provisional accreditation from the American Bar Association (ABA) shortly after its founding. This crucial milestone allowed for a comprehensive array of classes to be offered by the fall of 1975, ensuring a robust and complete legal education pathway. The school celebrated a pivotal moment in its young life with the graduation of its first class in the spring of 1976, cementing its role as a vital contributor to the legal landscape.
