Virginia State University

Virginia State University (VSU) stands as a proud public historically Black land-grant institution, embodying its powerful motto: "Greater Happens Here." Founded in 1882, VSU is nestled in Ettrick, Chesterfield County, Virginia, on a picturesque bluff overlooking the Appomattox River, just across from Petersburg. It’s easily accessible, symbolizing its role as a beacon of education and opportunity.

VSU's journey began with legislative foresight on March 6, 1882, though its opening was delayed by a hostile lawsuit, finally welcoming students on October 1, 1883. From its humble beginnings with 126 students and seven faculty, VSU has consistently adapted and grown, despite various name changes and program revisions over the decades. It played a pivotal role in the educational landscape, notably becoming the home for the land-grant program for Black students in 1920, solidifying its commitment to practical and advanced learning. Its early leaders, like John Mercer Langston—a great-uncle of Langston Hughes and a former Congressman—were trailblazers, shaping not only the university but also American history.

Today, VSU thrives as a dynamic institution with a vibrant student body of 5,701, continuing its legacy of excellence under the leadership of President Makola M. Abdullah. The university's dedication to student success and community impact is further bolstered by significant philanthropic support, including two historic donations from MacKenzie Scott totaling $80 million. With a robust 236-acre campus and extensive resources, VSU offers a rich academic and student experience, preparing future generations to lead and innovate.
