Viterbo University

Viterbo University, a private institution founded in 1890, stands as a testament to educational evolution and commitment. With a vibrant student body of 1,904, Viterbo has grown from its humble beginnings into a comprehensive university, offering a wide array of undergraduate and graduate programs designed to prepare students for impactful careers. Led by President Richard C. Trietley, Jr., Viterbo maintains a focus on providing a rich academic experience rooted in its enduring values.

The university's rich history began when the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration established St. Rose Normal School in 1890 to educate religious sisters as elementary school teachers. This foundational mission quickly expanded, introducing college courses by 1923 and developing into a four-year program by the early 1930s, then known as St. Rose Junior College. By 1939, it achieved approval as a four-year degree-granting institution for teachers and was renamed Viterbo College, marking a significant milestone in its journey.

The commitment to expanding liberal arts and professional education continued throughout the mid-20th century. Viterbo College earned accreditation as a four-year liberal arts college in 1952 and has maintained continuous accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (formerly the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools) since 1954. Demonstrating its full growth and broadened scope of offerings, the institution was officially renamed Viterbo University on September 4, 2000. This transformation culminated in the introduction of its first doctoral program, in nursing practice, in 2013, solidifying its status as a robust institution dedicated to advanced learning across various disciplines.
