Founded in 1890 by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, Viterbo has grown from its origins as St. Rose Normal School into a comprehensive university dedicated to fostering intellectual and personal growth rooted in Franciscan values. The university's journey is one of remarkable evolution. Initially established to prepare religious sisters for teaching, Viterbo steadily expanded its educational offerings, introducing college courses in 1923 and becoming St. Rose Junior College by the early 1930s. By 1939, it received approval as a four-year degree-granting institution, rebranding as Viterbo College. This period saw a significant expansion of its liberal arts curriculum, earning it accreditation as a four-year liberal arts college by 1952, marking a pivotal step in its academic development.

Today, Viterbo University stands as a testament to continuous growth and academic excellence. On September 4, 2000, it officially became Viterbo University, reflecting its broad spectrum of undergraduate and graduate programs and robust outreach initiatives. Further demonstrating its commitment to advanced education, the university introduced its first doctoral program, in nursing practice, in 2013. Fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, Viterbo University continues to uphold its legacy of preparing students for meaningful careers and lives of service.
