Voorhees University

Voorhees University stands as a testament to enduring vision and commitment to education for African Americans. Founded in 1897 by the remarkable Elizabeth Evelyn Wright, this private historically Black university (HBCU) was initially modeled after the renowned Tuskegee Institute. From its humble beginnings in an old store with just fourteen students, Voorhees has blossomed into a beacon of learning, dedicated to shaping future leaders and empowering its community.

The institution's journey reflects a dynamic history of growth and adaptation. Early on, a pivotal $5,000 donation from philanthropist Ralph Voorhees enabled the school to acquire its current 250-acre campus. Over the decades, it evolved through several name changes—from Denmark Industrial School to Voorhees Industrial Institute, then Voorhees School and Junior College, before becoming Voorhees College in 1962 with the addition of a four-year curriculum. This continuous development showcases its unwavering commitment to expanding academic opportunities.

Voorhees has also been a site of significant social change, notably during the 1969 student occupation where 75 students bravely advocated for Black study programs, faculty, and community scholarships, underscoring the university's role in the civil rights movement. More recently, Voorhees has garnered substantial philanthropic support, including a $4 million donation in 2020 and a historic $19 million in 2025 from MacKenzie Scott, further bolstering its mission. Celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2022, the institution proudly adopted its current name, Voorhees University.

Today, under the leadership of President Ronnie Hopkins, Voorhees University provides a vibrant, close-knit academic environment for its 507 students. It continues its tradition of fostering intellectual growth, leadership, and a strong sense of community, preparing students to make meaningful contributions to the world.
