Voorhees University

Voorhees University stands as a testament to enduring educational vision and community spirit. Founded in 1897 by the remarkable Elizabeth Evelyn Wright as the Denmark Industrial School, it was modeled after the esteemed Tuskegee Institute, providing vital education for African Americans in a rural setting. This private historically black university has consistently adapted and grown, upholding its mission to serve its students and the broader community.

From its humble beginnings in an old store with just fourteen students, Voorhees quickly gained momentum. A transformative $5,000 donation from philanthropist Ralph Voorhees in 1902 enabled the purchase of land and construction of new facilities, solidifying its foundation. The institution's evolution continued through several name changes—from Voorhees Industrial Institute for Colored Youths to Voorhees School and Junior College, and eventually, Voorhees College—each reflecting its expanding academic scope and commitment to higher education.

The university's history is also marked by a powerful student voice, notably the 1969 armed occupation by 75 students demanding more Black study programs, diverse faculty, and community outreach. This pivotal event, though met with initial resistance, underscored the students' unwavering dedication to social justice and academic relevance. Today, Voorhees University continues to build on this legacy, fostering a close-knit community of 507 students.

In recent years, Voorhees University has garnered significant philanthropic support, including two of its largest donations from MacKenzie Scott: $4 million in 2020 and a historic $19 million in 2025. These contributions underscore the university's enduring value and its vital role in shaping future leaders, affirming its place as a dynamic and forward-thinking institution committed to its rich heritage and the success of its students.
