Walsh College

Walsh College stands as a distinctive institution with a rich legacy in professional business education. Born from a visionary approach to teaching accounting, it evolved into an innovative upper-division college, creating seamless pathways for students transitioning from community colleges. Today, Walsh is renowned for its career-focused programs in accounting, finance, management, and especially cyber defense, equipping graduates with the practical skills demanded by a dynamic global economy.

The college's journey began on July 7, 1922, when Mervyn B. Walsh, a certified public accountant, founded the Walsh Institute of Accountancy in Detroit. Pioneering the innovative Pace Accounting Method, the institute laid a strong foundation. A pivotal transformation occurred in 1968, as Michigan adopted new CPA exam requirements. Rather than compete, Walsh embraced an upper-division model, becoming Walsh College of Accountancy and Business Administration and forging strong partnerships with community colleges, a strategy that continues to define its identity.

Walsh College quickly expanded its academic offerings, introducing its first bachelor's degrees in 1970 and a Master of Science in Taxation by 1974. Its commitment to quality was recognized with accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) in 1975. The college boasts a comprehensive suite of master's degrees, including Professional Accountancy, Finance, and Management, alongside cutting-edge programs like the Master of Science in Information Assurance, which earned it national recognition from the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense. In 2006, it further elevated its academic profile by offering its first doctoral degree, the Doctor of Management (DM) in Executive Leadership.

Beyond its strong curriculum, Walsh College fosters a student-centric environment, inviting business leaders to teach and develop relevant programs. It embraced online learning early, offering its first online courses in 1998 and fully online degree programs since 2001, providing flexibility for working professionals. With initiatives like the Blackstone LaunchPad, supported by a $2 million grant, Walsh actively promotes entrepreneurship among its students and alumni, ensuring graduates are not just job-ready, but also innovators and leaders.
