The institute boasts a rich and transformative history, beginning its journey in 1941 as the Topeka Trade School. This foundational period established its enduring commitment to vocational education, evolving through various iterations such as the Northeast Kansas Vocational Technical School (established by Kansas lawmakers in 1964) and the Kaw Area Vocational Technical School in 1967. The school further solidified its presence by opening its current, dedicated facility in 1968, continually adapting to serve the educational and workforce needs of the region.

A significant milestone occurred in 2008 when the school transitioned its responsibility from Topeka Unified School District 501 to Washburn University, officially becoming the Washburn Institute of Technology.
