Washington Adventist University, a private institution rooted in the principles of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, truly lives up to its inspiring motto: "Gateway to Service." Since its inception, WAU has been dedicated to cultivating individuals ready to make a meaningful impact, and today, it is strategically evolving to meet the demands of modern society, with a strong emphasis on health sciences.

The university's journey began in 1904 as Washington Training College, marking the start of a rich and adaptive history. Over the decades, it transformed and grew, adopting new identities such as Washington Foreign Mission Seminary in 1907, Washington Missionary College in 1914, and Columbia Union College in 1961, before proudly becoming Washington Adventist University in 2009. These name changes reflect its continuous evolution and commitment to its mission.

Under the leadership of President Weymouth Spence, WAU has embarked on a forward-thinking restructuring, pivoting significantly towards becoming a health science-focused institution. This strategic academic shift prepares its approximately 695 students for crucial roles in healthcare and related fields, ensuring they are equipped with highly relevant skills. The university also demonstrated its deep community ties in 2007 when its board opted against selling its beloved radio station, WGTS 91.9FM, following widespread listener support.
