Step into history at Washington College, the only institution of higher education in the United States that can proudly claim George Washington's direct involvement in its founding. Nestled in the historic port city of "Chester Town," this venerable institution evolved from the Kent County Free School, an establishment with a rich heritage spanning over two centuries before the college's formal inception.

Washington College earned its distinguished name with the consent of General George Washington himself, who not only pledged 50 guineas to its establishment but also extended his heartfelt wishes for its "lasting and extensive usefulness." More profoundly, he served on the college's Board of Visitors and Governors—his singular involvement with any institution of higher learning. This foundational backing, coupled with the Maryland legislature granting its first college charter in May 1782, solidified Washington College's place as a pioneer in American education.

The college's first president, the Reverend William Smith, envisioned Washington College as a key component of a public "University of Maryland," a bold plan that, while never fully funded, showcased the institution's ambitious beginnings. Despite facing challenges, including a devastating fire that destroyed its original building in 1827, the college rebuilt, erecting iconic structures like Middle Hall in 1844, which still stands today as part of the historic Hill Dorms—a testament to its enduring legacy.
