Washtenaw Community College

Washtenaw Community College (WCC) stands as a beacon of accessible higher education in Michigan, serving an impressive 20,000 students. Founded in 1965, its early days were remarkably unconventional. Rather than a grand, singular campus, WCC began its journey by holding classes in an array of county sites, from an elementary school and a dairy farm to a church basement and even an abandoned bomber plant. This unique, decentralized start highlights the college's early commitment to bringing education directly to the community.

The vision for a central campus materialized swiftly. In December 1965, the college secured an apple orchard, and by summer 1967, construction was underway. This innovative transformation culminated in September 1970, when WCC's operations officially moved to its dedicated campus on Huron River Drive, solidifying its presence and providing a cohesive learning environment for its growing student body.

Today, WCC continues its legacy of fostering academic and professional growth. From its initial offerings in over 30 occupational areas, it has consistently adapted to provide relevant, high-quality programs. As a vibrant public community college, it offers an engaging and supportive environment for students from diverse backgrounds, preparing them for transfer to four-year institutions or direct entry into the workforce.
