Waubonsee Community College

Waubonsee Community College stands as a vibrant educational cornerstone in the Fox River Valley, tracing its roots back to August 1966. Its very name, "Waubonsee," meaning "early dawn" or "early day," was chosen through a district-wide contest, paying homage to Chief Waubonsie, a respected Potawatomi chief who once called this region home. This thoughtful naming reflects the college's deep connection to its community and its mission to illuminate new paths for its students.

From its inception, Waubonsee was designed to serve its local populace. Initial classes commenced in September 1967, utilizing various community facilities to accommodate its first cohort of 1,603 students. This rapid growth underscored the community's demand for accessible higher education. A pivotal moment arrived in December 1967 with a successful bond referendum, which paved the way for the development of a permanent, dedicated campus.

This vision materialized in Sugar Grove, where the main campus was established on a sprawling 243-acre site. Over the years, this campus has grown into a comprehensive learning environment, featuring modern laboratories for hands-on learning, a well-equipped library for research and study, and even a serene nature trail for recreation and reflection. Waubonsee Community College continues to evolve, offering a supportive and dynamic setting for students to pursue their academic and career aspirations.
