Waubonsee Community College

Waubonsee Community College stands as a testament to community-driven education, proudly serving the Fox River Valley since its inception. Founded in August 1966, this institution quickly began shaping its unique identity and robust curriculum in early 1967. The college's name, "Waubonsee," meaning "early dawn" or "early day," was chosen through a district-wide contest, honoring Chief Waubonsie, a revered Potawatomi chief from the 1800s whose legacy is deeply intertwined with the region. This meaningful name reflects the college's role in illuminating new paths for its students, much like the break of a new day.

From its humble beginnings, Waubonsee rapidly grew to meet the educational needs of its community. Initially holding classes in various local facilities in September 1967, the college welcomed an impressive 1,603 students in its inaugural year. This strong start underscored the demand for accessible higher education. A pivotal moment came with a successful bond referendum in December 1967, which paved the way for the establishment of a permanent, dedicated campus.

The main campus, located in Sugar Grove on a sprawling 243-acre site, quickly became a hub for learning and discovery. It has since expanded to offer a comprehensive array of educational and recreational facilities designed to support a vibrant student experience.
