Waubonsee Community College

Waubonsee Community College stands as a cornerstone of education in the Fox River Valley, known for its commitment to community-centric learning and development. Established in August 1966, the college quickly laid the groundwork for an institution designed to serve its local populace. Its distinctive name, "Waubonsee," was chosen through a district-wide contest, honoring Chief Waubonsie, a revered Potawatomi chief whose legacy is deeply rooted in the region. The name itself, meaning "early dawn" or "early day," symbolizes new beginnings and the college's role in ushering in educational opportunities for its students.

The college's journey began modestly, holding its inaugural classes in September 1967 within various community facilities, yet it immediately made an impact by serving 1,603 students. This early success underscored the pressing need for a permanent educational hub. A pivotal moment arrived in December 1967 with a successful bond referendum, which paved the way for the establishment of its permanent Sugar Grove campus.
