Wentworth's story began in 1903 with the visionary philanthropy of Arioch Wentworth, a Boston marble supplier who donated a significant $7 million to establish an industrial school focused on 'education in the mechanical arts.' Officially incorporated in 1904, the institute opened its doors in 1911 to 242 eager students, rapidly growing to 1,800 students by 1919. This foundation in technical and industrial education laid the groundwork for its enduring legacy of practical excellence.

Over the decades, Wentworth has continually evolved to meet the demands of a changing world. It transitioned into a degree-granting institution in 1957, awarding its first baccalaureate degrees in 1970 and proudly admitting its first female students in 1972. The institute further broadened its academic offerings, becoming a master's degree-granting institution in 2009 with its highly regarded Master of Architecture program, and achieving full university status in 2017.
