About Wesley Theological Seminary
Empowering Methodist leaders for a changing world from its Washington D.C. home.
Wesley Theological Seminary stands as a distinguished center for theological education, preparing dedicated leaders for ministry in a dynamic world. Rooted deeply in the Methodist tradition, this institution is one of only thirteen theological schools officially recognized by the United Methodist Church, making it a vital force in shaping the future of faith leadership. Situated in the vibrant heart of Washington, D.C., Wesley offers an unparalleled setting for study, reflection, and engagement with the broader community.
The seminary's rich history traces back to 1881, when the Methodist Protestant Church's Maryland Annual Conference laid the groundwork for its founding. Established in 1882 as Westminster Theological Seminary in Westminster, Maryland, it embarked on a journey of growth and transformation. A significant turning point came in 1939, when Westminster joined the ten theological schools under the newly formed Methodist Church, leading to a period of rapid expansion and increasing influence. This growth necessitated a strategic relocation.
In 1955, the decision was made to move to a more central location, leading to its relocation to Washington, D.C., in 1958. This pivotal move also brought a new identity, as Westminster was officially renamed Wesley Theological Seminary. This relocation solidified its position as a key institution for theological study, benefiting from the intellectual and cultural richness of the nation's capital. Today, Wesley Theological Seminary continues its legacy, fostering an environment where future spiritual leaders are equipped to serve and inspire within the United Methodist Church and beyond.
