West Liberty University

West Liberty University, a public institution nestled in West Virginia, boasts a rich history dating back to its establishment on March 30, 1837. With a student body of 2,505, it primarily serves aspiring scholars from the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia, eastern Ohio, and western Pennsylvania. Originally founded as West Liberty Academy to address the need for higher education opportunities west of the Appalachian ridge, West Liberty continues its legacy of providing accessible and quality learning opportunities.

Established as a normal school, the institution's unique name, "West Liberty," harkens back to the late 18th century, symbolizing the westernmost reach of the new liberty proclaimed by the U.S. Declaration of Independence. A pivotal period was the 35-year presidency of Paul N. Elbin, beginning in 1935, under whose guidance the academy transitioned through West Liberty State Teachers College to West Liberty State College, developing a comprehensive curriculum and vibrant student life encompassing music and theatre.

This commitment to growth culminated in November 2008, when it was approved by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission to become a university, officially adopting the title West Liberty University in May 2009. Under the leadership of its 38th president, Tim Borchers, who assumed his role in July 2023, West Liberty continues to be a cornerstone of educational opportunity, fostering a dynamic environment for its regional student body.
