West Liberty University

West Liberty University, a distinguished public institution nestled in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle, boasts a rich educational heritage dating back to March 30, 1837. Established as West Liberty Academy, it remarkably predates West Virginia's statehood and was founded to meet the crucial need for higher education opportunities west of the Appalachian ridge. Its very name, "West Liberty," reflects its historical significance, marking the westernmost point of the "new liberty" proclaimed by the U.S. Declaration of Independence, setting a tone for pioneering education in the region.

Over nearly two centuries, West Liberty has undergone a significant transformation from its origins as a normal school. A pivotal era was under the remarkable 35-year leadership of Paul N. Elbin, who, at age 30, was the youngest president of a four-year college in the U.S. During his tenure from 1935 to 1970, the institution evolved from West Liberty Academy to West Liberty State Teachers College and subsequently to West Liberty State College. This period saw the comprehensive development of its full curriculum, the expansion of its faculty and staff, enhanced student services, and a vibrant array of activities including music and theatre.

Today, West Liberty University continues its legacy of serving a diverse student body, primarily drawing its 2,505 students from the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia, eastern Ohio, and western Pennsylvania. Officially gaining university status in 2009, West Liberty reflects its expanded academic offerings and unwavering commitment to providing a well-rounded educational experience. Under the leadership of its 38th president, Tim Borchers, who assumed his role in 2023, West Liberty remains dedicated to fostering an engaging and supportive environment, preparing students for future success.
