About West Valley College
West Valley College: Building educational foundations for its community since 1963.
Nestled in a vibrant region, West Valley College stands as a cornerstone of public community education, dedicated to fostering academic and personal growth since its founding in 1963. With a thriving student body of 8,056 learners, West Valley College offers a dynamic environment where students can pursue their educational aspirations. Under the leadership of President Jennifer Taylor-Mendoza, the college continues its legacy of empowering individuals and strengthening the community it serves.
The college's journey began with a powerful testament to community vision and support. Formed through enthusiastic voter approval in January 1963, the West Valley Junior College district was specifically designed to serve the educational needs of the Campbell Union, Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union, and Santa Clara Unified High School Districts. Its very first classes bravely commenced on September 14, 1964, in a rather unconventional setting: the facilities of the defunct Campbell Union Grammar School. This initial arrangement, necessitated by the grammar school's WPA-era buildings being deemed unsafe due to earthquake risks, saw many classes held in portable classrooms on former playgrounds, highlighting the college's early adaptability and determination.
This spirit of resilience paved the way for West Valley College's growth into the robust institution it is today. Recognizing the need for a dedicated home, the college acquired land for its permanent campus in 1966, followed by a celebratory groundbreaking on June 15, 1967. The transition was gradual but steady; by 1968, the first new buildings were occupied, allowing some classes to shift to the burgeoning campus, even as further permanent structures were still under construction. This phased move culminated in 1975, marking the full establishment of West Valley College in its modern, permanent home, a testament to its enduring commitment to providing top-tier educational facilities for its community.
