West Virginia State University

West Virginia State University (WVSU) stands as a testament to educational resilience and evolving diversity. Founded in 1891 as the West Virginia Colored Institute under the second Morrill Act, it was one of the original 19 land-grant colleges dedicated to providing higher education for Black students. Over its rich history, WVSU transformed from a vital center of Black intellectual life into a remarkably inclusive campus, proudly embracing a student body that reflects the broader American demographic.

Today, WVSU is known for its strong commitment to its land-grant mission, evident through the Gus R. Douglass Land-Grant Institute. This institute houses the WVSU Extension Service, the WVSU Agricultural and Environmental Research Station, and the Center for the Advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (CASTEM). The university's history is marked by significant milestones, including pioneering accreditation in 1927 as the first of the original Black land-grant schools and the first public college in West Virginia to achieve this status. WVSU played a crucial role during World War II, training African-American pilots who joined the legendary Tuskegee Airmen and participating in the V-12 Navy College Training Program. Its robust ROTC program, established in 1942, continues a proud tradition, boasting 15 general officers among its distinguished graduates.
