Western Illinois University

Step into a legacy of learning at Western Illinois University, an institution deeply woven into the fabric of higher education since its founding on April 24, 1899. Born from the spirited competition among Illinois towns and the generous land donation by Macomb's Freemasons, WIU has grown from humble beginnings into a significant regional university. Its first classes welcomed 229 students on September 23, 1902, an event still celebrated annually as Founders' Day, marking the vibrant start of its educational journey.

Originally known as the Western Illinois State Normal School, the university has evolved through several name changes, reflecting its expanding mission—to Western Illinois State Teachers College in 1921, then Western Illinois State College in 1947, before finally becoming Western Illinois University in 1957. The majestic Sherman Hall, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, served as its initial cornerstone and remains a symbol of its enduring heritage. Today, the Macomb campus spans an impressive 1,050 acres with 53 buildings, a testament to its continuous expansion and commitment to providing a comprehensive learning environment.

Beyond its main Macomb campus, Western Illinois University has also extended its reach into the Quad Cities for over four decades, offering its first undergraduate course there in Fall 1960.
