Founded on April 24, 1899, as the Western Illinois State Normal School, its very location in Macomb was a hard-won prize, secured with the help of local Freemasons. Sherman Hall, the iconic administration building and a National Register of Historic Places landmark, stands as a testament to its early days. Classes first commenced on September 23, 1902, an event still celebrated annually as Founders’ Day, inviting students to connect with the institution's proud heritage.

Over the decades, Western Illinois University has evolved, expanding its Macomb campus to encompass 53 buildings across 1,050 acres. Its commitment to accessibility also led to a significant presence in the Quad Cities, with undergraduate courses offered there since 1960.
