Western Illinois University (WIU) has a rich history of fostering education and community engagement, beginning its journey over a century ago. Founded on April 24, 1899, as the Western Illinois State Normal School, it quickly became a vital institution in the region. From its humble beginnings with 229 students in 1902, WIU has grown into a comprehensive university, adapting and evolving over time. Its name changed multiple times to reflect its expanding mission, culminating in its current designation in 1957. The Macomb campus, now spanning 1,050 acres with 53 buildings, offers a diverse and vibrant learning environment, while its long-standing presence in the Quad Cities, dating back to 1960, extends its educational reach even further.
