Western Theological Seminary

Western Theological Seminary (WTS) stands as a beacon for those called to full-time Christian ministry, offering robust theological training with a deep historical connection to the Reformed Church in America. While recently becoming an independent institution, WTS proudly carries forward a legacy of over 150 years, dedicated to nurturing spiritual leaders who are prepared to serve and transform communities.

The seminary's origins trace back to a profound educational vision by Albertus van Raalte, who founded Hope College based on the belief in parents' primary role in education. In 1866, seven Hope College graduates, inspired by a call to ministry, petitioned the General Synod for local theological training. This led to the establishment of Western Theological Seminary within Hope College's Religion Department, a testament to its foundational commitment to equipping future spiritual leaders right in West Michigan.

Evolving from its departmental beginnings, WTS officially separated from Hope College in 1884, solidifying its identity as a distinct institution focused solely on theological education.
