About Westmoreland County Community College
Westmoreland: Your launchpad for academic achievement and career success.
Westmoreland County Community College, proudly embracing its motto "Ambitious," stands as a pivotal public community college dedicated to empowering its students for both immediate career entry and seamless transfer to four-year institutions. Since its official founding in 1970, WCCC has grown into a cornerstone of regional education, renowned for its comprehensive programs, accessible learning centers, and vibrant student life.
The college's journey began modestly in 1971 with evening classes for 243 students at Jeannette High School. By 1972, it found its permanent home in a former Westinghouse plant in Youngwood, quickly expanding to offer day classes. Over the four decades since, the original Youngwood campus has flourished into a four-building complex, complemented by six additional education centers spread across Murrysville, Fayette County, Indiana County, Latrobe, New Kensington, and the Public Safety Training Center in Smithton. This strategic expansion underscores Westmoreland's unwavering commitment to making quality education available throughout the wider community.
Academically, Westmoreland shines with an impressive array of 64 associate degree programs, 13 diploma options, and 49 certificate programs designed to prepare students for diverse professional paths or further university studies. Beyond traditional academic offerings, the college provides vital Continuing Education courses for adults, displaced workers, non-traditional students, and even engaging summer camps for kids. The student experience is further enriched by the competitive athletics program, the "Wolfpack," featuring baseball, basketball, bowling, softball, and volleyball. Notably, the women's cross country team achieved a #2 national ranking in Fall 2020, and in Fall 2023, the entire athletics program elevated to NCJAA Division II, now proudly offering scholarships to student-athletes. With a focus on practical skills, academic excellence, and student support, Westmoreland County Community College is truly a place where ambition takes flight.
