Wheeling University

Wheeling University, a private institution in West Virginia, boasts a rich and transformative history spanning over six decades. Founded in 1954 as Wheeling College through a unique partnership between the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston and the Society of Jesus, it began with a vision to bring Jesuit education to the growing city. From its humble beginnings with temporary facilities and a dedicated faculty, the institution steadily grew, evolving into Wheeling Jesuit College in the late 1980s and achieving full university status in 1996.

For many years, Wheeling was deeply rooted in the Jesuit tradition, with its curriculum and mission reflecting a commitment to critical thinking and service. Jesuit priests were actively involved in education and campus life, residing in Whelan Hall and contributing to initiatives like the Appalachian Institute. This heritage shaped the academic environment, emphasizing holistic development and intellectual rigor for its students.

However, 2019 marked a significant turning point in the university's narrative. Following a restructuring of academic programs and the elimination of key Jesuit-identity majors, the Society of Jesus decided to end its formal academic affiliation. Consequently, the institution proudly embraced its new identity as Wheeling University in July 2019. Today, with 774 students, Wheeling University continues its mission as a private institution, inviting prospective students to explore its focused academic offerings and be part of its evolving story, guided by its enduring motto: "Luceat Lux Vestra" (Let your light shine).
