Whitworth University

Whitworth University, a private institution nestled in Spokane, Washington, stands by its guiding principle: "Education of Mind and Heart." Founded in 1890, Whitworth offers a unique blend of robust academics and a nurturing community for its nearly 3,000 students. The university's journey began in 1883 as the "Sumner Academy" before being incorporated as Whitworth College in 1890. Its early history is marked by significant relocations, driven by a quest for stability and community support. After a move to Tacoma in 1899, the college ultimately found its permanent home in Spokane in 1914, a move facilitated by crucial donations from the Spokane community and the Synod of Washington, overcoming initial financial struggles and local competition.

Over the decades, Whitworth continued to evolve, merging with Spokane Junior College in 1942 to navigate the challenges of World War II. This resilience and adaptability are core to its identity. The institution officially transitioned to Whitworth University in 2007, reflecting its expanded academic scope and continued growth.
