Whitworth University

The university's journey to its current home in Spokane is a testament to its enduring mission. What began as Sumner Academy in 1883, founded by George F. Whitworth, was incorporated as Whitworth College in 1890. Facing early challenges, including persistent financial difficulties and local competition, the college demonstrated remarkable resilience, relocating first to Tacoma in 1899. Its final and successful move to Spokane in 1914 was facilitated by strong community support and crucial funding from local boosters, the Spokane Presbytery, and railroad magnate Jay P. Graves, ensuring its permanent establishment.

This spirit of adaptation and community partnership continued through the years. In 1942, Whitworth College merged with Spokane Junior College, further solidifying its presence and expanding its reach. The institution proudly transitioned to Whitworth University in 2007, a change that reflected its evolving academic offerings and enhanced stature.
