About Wilkes Community College
Wilkes Community College: Cultivating success and community since 1964 in North Carolina.
Wilkes Community College stands as a cornerstone of accessible education in North Carolina, proudly serving its community as a public institution within the state's comprehensive community college system. Established in a pivotal era for post-secondary education, WCC emerged from the vision of the 1963 Community College Act, designed to bring quality learning opportunities closer to home for countless students.
The college's foundation is deeply rooted in local support and foresight. In September 1964, the citizens of Wilkes County demonstrated their commitment to education by approving a bond vote and tax authorization, paving the way for the construction and operation of the college. Officially founded by the North Carolina Board of Education in October 1964, WCC opened its doors in August 1965 to an initial class of 68 students, setting up its first campus across a 75-acre expanse featuring Thompson, Hayes, and Lovette halls.
From these foundational beginnings, Wilkes Community College has grown significantly, evolving into a vibrant educational hub. Today, under the leadership of President Dr. Michael Rodgers, WCC serves a student body of 2,558, continuing its mission to provide diverse programs and opportunities that empower individuals and strengthen the regional workforce. It remains a testament to community collaboration and enduring dedication to student success.
