Wilkes Community College

Wilkes Community College (WCC) stands as a beacon of accessible higher education in North Carolina, born from a visionary statewide initiative. Founded in 1964, WCC emerged as a direct response to the North Carolina General Assembly's Community College Act of 1963, which aimed to establish a robust system of comprehensive community colleges across the state. More than just an institution, WCC is a cornerstone of the North Carolina Community College system, dedicated to empowering students and enriching the local community.

The college's origins are deeply rooted in community spirit and democratic action. In September 1964, the citizens of Wilkes County overwhelmingly approved the establishment of WCC through a crucial bond vote, demonstrating a collective commitment to local education. This mandate paved the way for WCC's official founding in October 1964 by the North Carolina Board of Education. From humble beginnings in August 1965, with just 68 students, three buildings, and a 75-acre campus, WCC quickly laid the foundation for its enduring legacy.

Today, Wilkes Community College continues to thrive, serving a vibrant student body of 2,558. As a public community college, WCC offers diverse academic pathways, preparing students for immediate career entry or seamless transfer to four-year universities.
