Wilkes University began its journey in 1933 as Bucknell University Junior College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Born from a vision to bring higher education to urban areas, it quickly became a beacon for many first-generation college students. The institution rapidly outgrew its initial space, expanding across downtown Wilkes-Barre, transforming historic mansions into vibrant centers for learning and living. This early commitment to accessibility and growth laid the foundation for the thriving university it is today.

The post-war era saw Wilkes College, as it became in 1947, further solidify its mission. Bolstered by G.I. Bill recipients and increasing demand for on-campus living, the college embarked on significant expansion, including the development of robust science and engineering programs housed in the Stark Learning Center. Though facing challenges like the devastating Agnes flood in 1972, the spirit of resilience and dedication to academic excellence persevered, strengthening the bonds within the Wilkes community.

Evolving into Wilkes University in 1990, the institution continued to innovate, establishing the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy in 1999 and the Jay S. Sidhu School of Business & Leadership in 2004. These professional schools, alongside expanded facilities like the Simms Center on Main and the state-of-the-art Clayton and Theresa Karambelas Media and Communication Center, underscore Wilkes' commitment to offering cutting-edge programs. The university's continuous physical and academic growth reflects its dedication to providing a dynamic and supportive environment for students.
