Wilkes University

Wilkes University began its journey in 1933 as Bucknell University Junior College, established in Wilkes-Barre to serve urban areas and provide access to higher education for many first-generation college students. Quickly outgrowing its initial space, the institution expanded by acquiring historic mansions for housing and academic facilities. This community-rooted foundation solidified its commitment to broad accessibility and educational opportunity, laying the groundwork for its future as an independent and comprehensive university.

The college made a pivotal transition in 1947, becoming the independent, nondenominational Wilkes College. The post-war era saw significant growth, particularly fueled by G.I. Bill recipients and increasing demand for on-campus living. Federal funding in the 1950s spurred development in science and engineering programs, leading to significant expansion in facilities and enrollment. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, the campus overcame the devastating 1972 Hurricane Agnes flood, which affected much of the downtown region, and continued its upward trajectory, officially gaining university status in 1990.

Today, Wilkes University is recognized for its robust academic offerings across the arts, sciences, and professional fields. Key advancements include the establishment of the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy in 1999 and the Jay S. Sidhu School of Business & Leadership in 2004, housed in the expansive Simms Center on Main. The university also boasts modern facilities like the Clayton and Theresa Karambelas Media and Communication Center, dedicated in 2017. Beyond academics, Wilkes fosters a vibrant student experience and strong community ties, hosting long-standing traditions such as the Annual High School Mathematics Contest, which awards full-tuition scholarships, and the Tom Bigler High School Journalism Conference, engaging hundreds of students annually.
