The institution's rich history began as Peace Institute, thanks to a pivotal $10,000 donation from local merchant William Peace, equivalent to $345,500 in 2025. Its iconic Main Building, a red brick, white-columned Greek revival structure, emerged just before the Civil War. Opening its doors in 1872, Peace Institute quickly became a beacon of women's education, proudly holding the distinction as the second-oldest institution of higher learning for women in North Carolina. A significant transformation occurred in 2011 when Peace College embraced a new identity as William Peace University, opening its doors to men for the first time in Fall 2012. This shift expanded its academic horizons, including the establishment of its School of Professional Studies.
