Wingate University

Wingate University, a dynamic private institution with 3,457 students, stands by its motto: "Faith, Knowledge, Service." Since its founding, it has been dedicated to transforming lives and fostering a supportive community. Established in 1896 as The Wingate School, it initially addressed a critical need for education in the region. Named after Washington Manly Wingate, the university has recently acknowledged its founder's complex history, reflecting a commitment to historical truth and ongoing dialogue. Despite facing significant challenges, including financial hardship during the Great Depression and the destruction of its administration building by fire in 1932, Wingate persevered. Its evolution from a junior college in 1923 to a four-year institution in 1977, and finally to Wingate University in 1995, showcases a remarkable journey of resilience and growth.

Today, Wingate University is recognized for its expanding academic offerings, including robust graduate programs. The university's commitment to specialized education is further exemplified by its Hendersonville campus, which hosts dedicated graduate programs in pharmacy and physician assistant studies. Having gained autonomy from the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina in 2009, Wingate continues to forge its path, maintaining a cooperative relationship while shaping its own distinctive identity for future generations of students.
