Winston-Salem State University

The university's journey began on September 28, 1892, as the Slater Industrial Academy, quickly establishing itself as a vital educational institution. Its historical significance soared in 1925 when the North Carolina General Assembly renamed it Winston-Salem Teachers College. In a groundbreaking move that same year, the North Carolina State Board of Education granted the college the authority to award elementary teacher education degrees, marking it as the very first Black institution to offer this specialized and crucial training. This pivotal moment cemented WSSU's place in educational history and its ongoing dedication to academic excellence.

Looking towards the future, Winston-Salem State University has garnered significant philanthropic support, demonstrating confidence in its mission and impact. The university received a substantial $30 million donation from MacKenzie Scott in 2020, at the time the second-largest single gift in its history. This generosity was further amplified in 2025 with an additional $50 million from Ms. Scott, marking the largest single gift ever received by the university, underscoring its growing influence and capacity to continue shaping future generations.
