The university's journey began on September 28, 1892, as the Slater Industrial Academy. A pivotal moment arrived in 1925 when it was renamed Winston-Salem Teachers College, marking a significant milestone as the North Carolina State Board of Education granted it the authority to award elementary teacher education degrees. This made WSSU the very first black institution in the nation to provide such specialized training, solidifying its place as a pioneer in American education and setting a high standard for teacher preparation.

Today, Winston-Salem State continues its path of growth and excellence, recently bolstered by transformative philanthropic support. The university received substantial gifts from MacKenzie Scott, including a remarkable $30 million in 2020, followed by an even more historic $50 million donation in 2025, which stands as the largest single gift in the university's history.
