Wittenberg University

Wittenberg University stands as a distinguished private liberal arts college with a rich and storied past, established in 1845. Bearing the esteemed name of the historic University of Wittenberg in Germany—the very town where Martin Luther famously posted his Ninety-five Theses—this institution carries a powerful legacy. Founded by a group of forward-thinking ministers, including the principal founder and first president, Rev. Ezra Keller, Wittenberg College initially focused on training clergy through its Hamma School of Divinity. A pivotal mission was to "Americanize" Lutherans by teaching in English, setting it apart from other institutions. The college quickly grew from an inaugural class of eight to seventy-one students, a testament to its early appeal. Demonstrating a progressive vision, Wittenberg opened its doors to women in 1874 and welcomed its first Black students in 1875, significantly predating many of its peers.
