Originally established as Yakima Valley Junior College, it holds the distinction of being the third junior college ever opened in Washington state, setting a precedent for accessible higher education in the region. The college's inspiring journey began with the vision of Charles L. Littel, superintendent of the Yakima School District, leading to its opening on September 17, 1928, with classes initially held at Yakima's Columbia School building. By 1930, YVC proudly celebrated its first graduating class, marking the beginning of a long tradition of academic excellence. This early commitment laid the groundwork for the institution's enduring impact on countless lives and the economic vitality of the community.

Growth and development have been central to YVC's story. A pivotal moment arrived in 1937 with the generous donation of land by the family of Yakima businessman A.E. Larson, providing the foundation for a dedicated campus. The first building, Prior Hall, was proudly dedicated in 1949 and named in honor of Elizabeth Prior, the college's pioneering first president. This historic hall became the heart of campus life, housing classrooms, administrative offices, a bookstore, an assembly hall, and music practice rooms, reflecting the college's comprehensive approach to student needs.

YVC has evolved significantly, mirroring the changing landscape of education. After transitioning from a junior college to a community college in 1961, and operating for decades under various names including Yakima Valley Community College, it officially reaffirmed its identity as Yakima Valley College on June 1, 2016. This evolution underscores its continuous commitment to providing relevant, high-quality education and its steadfast dedication to the students and families of the Yakima Valley.
